First People’s Principles of Learning

The First People’s Principles of Learning (FPPL) are very important to me. I want all of my students to feel included and welcomed into learning in my classroom. Our schools are heavily influenced by colonial ideas and traditions and this can be triggering to Indigenous students or even immigrant students. Using the FPPL we can learn from the traditional ways of teaching of the Indigenous people to make our classrooms more holistic. To me the FPPL represent a launching point for the minimum of what I can do to incorporate Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing into my classroom. Besides having the Indigenous children feel comfortable and wanted it encourages an atmosphere conducive to a growth mindset.
